Scholarships

All scholarship applications are handled by the high school guidance counselors at all county high schools – except for the Rex and Martha Kellogg 4H scholarship which is handled through the Phillips County Extension office.

Velma Munyon Scholarship 

This scholarship fund was established to provide scholarships for the benefit of worthy graduating Phillipsburg High School students to assist in their post high school education. These students should show great promise, have good grades and show leadership and courtesy.

Matt Merklein Memorial Scholarship

This memorial scholarship was established for students who intend to pursue an education in computers, technology or a vocational field of interest. The applicant must be graduating from Phillipsburg High School and have an academic record of at least 3.0.  

Rick Mendoza Memorial Scholarship

This memorial scholarship was established to fund an annual scholarship award to a graduating Phillipsburg High School Senior who meets the scholarship criteria, provides verification of enrollment in an accredited institution of higher learning and who has the stated intent to become a certified teacher.

Robert Peters Memorial Scholarship

The recipient of this memorial scholarship should be an individual interested in agriculture, vocational education or trade school. The candidate should have an average grade of a B or C with a friendly, easy-going personality.

PHS Instrumental Music Scholarship

This scholarship is for a qualified Phillipsburg High School graduating senior who is a member of the PHS band. Applicants should have excellent grades and participation in regional/state contests, league clinics or other activity promoting instrumental music would be beneficial in award considerations. The student should demonstrate superior musicianship and skill, leadership and encouragement to others.

Cole Wenzl Memorial Scholarship

This memorial scholarship was established in memory of Cole Wenzl. Applicants must be a graduating senior from PHS and have a current GPA of 3.2 or higher, must have participated in at least two extra-curricular school related activities, must plan on attending a post-secondary education school full-time (not on-line only), and must have a degree determined and future career path in mind.

Greg Babcock Memorial Scholarship

This memorial scholarship, in honor of a former long-time instructor at Phillipsburg High School, is for an annual scholarship to a graduating Phillipsburg High School senior who meets the scholarship criteria and plans to enroll in an accredited institution of higher learning to study a technical field.

Howard King Volunteer of the Year Scholarship

Howard King has given of himself and volunteered unselfishly for many years in Phillips County. This scholarship was established in honor of Howard and his years of service, and to challenge and encourage students to “be the difference” in their community through volunteering. The scholarship is not based on grade point average but is for the student who volunteers the most in the community. 

Huck Boyd Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established for the purpose of recognizing students of Phillipsburg High School who have great potential for service as citizens. Recipients must be in the top 15% of his or her class. Credit will be given for extra-curricular activities as well as scholarship achievements, the ability to work with others, and good citizenship, both in and out of school.

VFW Auxiliary Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to one Phillips County graduating high school student from Logan, Phillipsburg, Thunder Ridge or Northern Valley High School pursuing a 2-year degree or other credentialed program. 

Frank and Beth Freeman Book Scholarship

Frank and Beth Freeman were both educators in Phillipsburg and knew the value of continued education and the expense of college textbooks. This scholarship was established to help worthy students with the extra costs associated with secondary education.

Lloyd and Shirley Tubbs Scholarship

This scholarship fund has been established to provide scholarships for graduates of Northern Valley High School with the intent to provide post-high school education for students who have demonstrated potential for success but may not otherwise qualify for scholarship awards that are based solely on GPA or traditional performance measures. Preference will be given to students pursuing areas of study relevant to Phillips County and surrounding areas and /or those who have a likelihood of returning to live and work in the vicinity of Phillips County. 

Manz Family Healthcare Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor the memory and legacy of the Manz Family whose lives exemplify compassion, community, and a deep respect for the healing professions. The scholarship supports individuals pursuing careers in healthcare who demonstrate a commitment to serving others, improving lives and strengthening the well-being of their communities. Applicants must be a resident of Phillips County, a graduating high school senior or adult learners (non-traditional student) and must be pursuing a degree or certification in a healthcare-related field (e.g. nursing, physical therapy, radiology, dentistry, laboratory, etc.)

Rex and Martha Kellogg 4H Scholarship

Rex and Martha Kellogg were strong supporters of Phillips County 4H and knew the value of continued education. This scholarship was established in their name by family members to be awarded to a Phillips County 4H member who is a graduating high school senior or in their first year of post-secondary education. Application is through the Phillips County Extension Office. Selection is based on documented 4H and community involvement, citizenship and leadership.
