Creating a Lasting Legacy Through Community Giving

Posted Wednesday June 17, 2026

Many of the institutions that define our communities have been serving local families for generations. Churches, schools, libraries, hospitals, and community organizations provide stability, support, and a sense of belonging. Their impact often extends far beyond their walls, touching countless lives over the years.

For many people, volunteering is the first step in supporting a cause they care about. Through serving on committees, helping with projects, participating in fundraisers, or simply lending a hand when needed, volunteers develop a deep appreciation for organizations that enrich community life.

Sometimes that appreciation inspires people to give back in even greater ways.

Howard King is a prime example. A lifelong volunteer, Howard grew up in a family that instilled the importance of community service. His parents and grandparents regularly involved him in local projects, teaching him the value of supporting the community and helping others.

Many years ago, Howard established a scholarship to support students pursuing post-secondary education. Wanting to encourage the next generation of community leaders, he made volunteerism and community involvement key criteria in the selection process.

“A town would die without volunteers, especially small towns,” said Howard. “I really hope this scholarship inspires these kids to continue volunteering throughout their lives.”

Supporting the Places That Matter Most

The Phillips County Community Foundation works with individuals and families who want to create a lasting impact by establishing charitable funds that will continue supporting the causes they care about for generations to come. These funds allow donors to create a permanent source of support for organizations and programs that have played an important role in their lives.

One example might be a lifelong church member who has spent decades attending services and watching generations of families gather within the same sanctuary. Over the years, they have seen the church replace a roof, repair windows, update heating and cooling systems, and maintain a building that serves as a cornerstone of the community.

While regular tithes and offerings help support the church's day-to-day ministry, major maintenance projects can place significant financial demands on a congregation. Wanting to help future church leaders avoid those challenges, a local donor created a fund specifically for the church they have belonged to for over 40 years.  Denis and Sue Miller created a fund designed specifically to provide financial support for future building maintenance for the First Christian Church in Phillipsburg.

“A church or any community facility is going to need repairs, maintenance and/or replacement of the infrastructure of the building and the property,” Denis said recently.  “These funds will assist in the maintenance of the facility as a helpful incentive to keep the property in good condition without placing the entire burden on future members.”

The Miller’s gift will continue to support a place that has been meaningful to their family and community for generations.

Stories like these illustrate how charitable funds can be tailored to reflect personal values and priorities. Whether supporting a church, a school, a local nonprofit, healthcare services, scholarships, or community programs, a fund provides an opportunity to create a lasting legacy.

At PCCF, we often hear people say they want to "give back" to the community that has given so much to them. Establishing a charitable fund is one way to ensure that the organizations and institutions that have shaped our lives will remain strong and vibrant for future generations.

The combination of volunteer service and charitable giving creates a powerful legacy. By investing in the future today, donors can help preserve the places, programs, and traditions that make Phillips County a special place to call home.

If you have ever wondered how you can support a church, school, nonprofit, or community institution that has been meaningful in your life, the Phillips County Community Foundation can help you explore options for creating a charitable legacy that reflects your values and vision for the future.
